4:00 AM, Oct 7, 2007 -

A Cook County jury late Thursday awarded $4 million to the family of a 14-year-old boy shot to death by an off-duty Chicago Police officer as the boy ran from the scene of an attempted robbery. Johnny Salazar and an older friend carrying an unloaded BB gun had entered the house of a cologne salesman to steal some cologne, said Donald Shapiro, attorney for Salazar's family. The salesman chased them out of the house, and the salesman's son Rafael Balbontin, the off-duty cop, fired eight shots at them as they ran down the block, killing Salazar, Shapiro said.
