Chicago, Tokyo, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro are vying to be selected as host for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Are these cities vying hard for the duty/privilege to host?

It gets more expensive every year, the sponsorships are dropping due to the economy and huge venues are needed for a one time event... I don't think a city has made a profit off this in decades.

However, Chicago is so well built up with stadiums, universities, and public facilities it just might work. I love watching the olympics; the crowds, the excitement, the proud citizens representing themselves and their country, the guts and glory that go into it. Plus, these are amazing feats of physical strength that are incredibly inspiring.

I think the bottom line is that the the Olympic committee needs to find a way to bring down costs, or no-one will want them to come to their town, just based off pure economics.

Those are the four cities that are left.. cut down from eight last year. I think the final decision will be made in October.

The International Olympic Committee delegates visited Chicago this past week and participated in days of meetings and presentations from Chicago 2016 organizers and supporters including video addresses by Barack Obama and Michael Jordan, dinner with Oprah Winfrey, etc.

The IOC goes on to visit the other three cities in the coming month or two.

Some people say Chicago benefits by being the first city to be visited as the delegates are not worn out.

Probably Chicago's biggest negative factor is the finances. The federal governments of the other cities all are backing up the financing and providing guarantees regarding funding, Chicago's bid does not include this. What good is Obama, hehe. He ought to earmark some billions of dollars of stimulus money to back up Chicago's bid!
