Default Energy Saving Tips from "Reilly Reports"

The 42nd Ward Office along with the Department of Environment would like to help you save money on your utility bills this year and have put together the following list of Energy Saving Tips for the winter heating season. These tips help save energy, the environment, and money!

Lower Your Thermostat - Every 5 Degrees you lower the temperature of your home over an 8 hour period saves about 5% on your heating bill.

Prevent Heat Loss - Weatherize your home by sealing windows with insulating plastic, adding weatherstripping to doors and windows, and caulking or sealing gaps that let cold air in.

Be Energy Smart - Save money and energy by turning off any lights, radios, televisions, or computers that aren't being used.

Be Energy Safe - Never use the stove to heat your home. If your furnace is not working properly or your heat has been disconnected, seek help. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working.

Plan Now For Later - Peoples Gas and ComEd offer payment plans that allow you to spread higher winter heating costs over the course of the year. To learn more call 1-866-566-6001 for Peoples Gas or 1-800-334-7661 for ComEd.

Attend a Winter Preparedness Fair - Receive a free weatherization kit and personalized assistance with all winter and cold weather related needs. For dates and locations, call 311 or visit www.cityofchicago.org
