August 26th, 2008 05:00 AM - A suspected bank robber was killed and a police officer injured during an exchange of gunfire in the northern suburbs Monday afternoon. The officer was not shot, but the gunman's bullets shattered the windows of the squad car he was sitting in -- leaving him with cuts and scrapes. Just after 5 p.m., the officer spotted the getaway vehicle for a robber who allegedly held up a Northbrook bank 30 minutes earlier, according to a police report. That was near Touhy and Cicero. Later, at Estes and Kilpatrick in nearby Lincolnwood, the suspect stopped the vehicle, got out and started firing at the Skokie squad car that had followed him. The officer managed to get out of the vehicle and fired several shots, killing the gunman, according to police. Click here to read the article... |
